Adapted for the cold with its hairy coat, sloping back and huge tusks, the Woolly mammoth, Mammuthus primigenius, has become the symbol of the Ice Age. Around 50,000 years ago the middle of the Ice Age was the heyday of the Woolly Mammoth in England.
The Woolly Mammoth probably arose in Siberia, but soon came to occupy a vast range, stretching from Ireland to the east coast of North America. Living south of the ice sheets, it inhabited a landscape of rich grassy vegetation largely devoid of trees. Sharing the habitat were other extinct species, such as the Woolly Rhinoceros and Giant Deer.
At close quarters, the Woolly Mammoth with its huge tusks apparently carving over its head presented an imposing site to any smaller animals, including humans. The details of its appearance such as its small ears, pointed trunk tip and the length of its hair, are known from whole carcasses found in Siberia. The Woolly mammoth represents the end point in a series of adaptations to the Ice Age habitat.
