Horses roamed Florida for many thousands of years. There were three different species of horses that were here in the Florida area, starting with the smallest, a three-toed horse about the size of a dog. The second species was about the size of a Shetland pony and the final species was almost the size of a modern horse. Then about 10,000 years ago they went extinct until the Spanish reintroduced them to this continent. The fossils on this page are from the Pleistocene Epoch and were found in the rivers of florida.
